Nestled in one of Harrogate’s picturesque rural villages, jkt architecture was appointed to revitalise a newly purchased bungalow set within a generous plot overlooking uninterrupted paddock views.
Un-updated for decades and showing signs of structural subsidence, the existing dwelling offered a blank canvas to create a fully tailored, accessible home.
Our client required a bespoke layout designed around their specific mobility needs while dramatically enhancing the flow, functional capacity, and overall value of the property.
Through a careful concept design process, our chartered architectural practice proposed a symmetrical dual-extension scheme, adding balanced side and rear extensions to either side of the original footprint.
• Central Living Core: The heart of the home opens into an expansive, light-filled open-plan living space that connects the entire dwelling.
• Zoned Accommodation: The layout is flanked by dedicated, private wings—separating the client’s private suite from accommodation for an assisted carer to ensure both independence and privacy.
• Functional Intelligence: Essential daily spaces, including a dedicated office, utility room, and discreet plant cupboard, were seamlessly integrated into the plan.
• Outdoor Integration: To the rear, extensive landscaping and a covered outdoor living canopy create a seamless transition between the internal living spaces and the surrounding Yorkshire landscape.
Respecting the rural village context was paramount. We specified a tactile, honest palette of local natural stone, brickwork, and natural timber cladding. This neutral, grounded aesthetic allows the refreshed home to sit harmoniously within its field-side backdrop.
To crown the structure, a new hipped roof form was introduced with dramatic, extended overhangs to the rear. This striking architectural feature serves a vital bioclimatic purpose: providing essential solar shading to prevent internal overheating during summer months while capturing low winter light.
